California Current Ecosystem Data Management

The California Current Ecosystem Data Management project combines a number of real-time data streams from within the California Current Ecosystem (CCE) and links them to a preliminary Integrated Ecosystem Assessment (IEA).

The Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) program collects numerous data sets from many scattered locations. These data exist in a variety of native formats, metadata, and vocabularies.

In a collaborative effort to integrate and standardize these data sets into an interoperable data system, the California Current Ecosystem Data Management (CCEDM) project seeks to produce a single, integrated source for discovery, access, transport, and analysis using the IOOS five core variables as well as a tangible application of the data to the evolving California Current Ecosystem Integrated Ecosystem Assessment.

NOAA's National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), NOAA's National Marine Sanctuary Program (NMSP), IOOS West Coast Regional Associations, and other Pacific Coastal Ocean Observing System (PaCOOS) technical partners are collaborating in this joint project to undertake the following tasks:

  1.   Web-based Infrastructure for NOAA California Current Ecosystem Data Integration and Services - NMFS is partnering with NCDDC to develop and implement an integrated, “one NOAA” infrastructure for web-based services such as data discovery, access, transport, integration, and analysis of NOAA CCE data with special emphasis on the IOOS core variables. IOOS has identified five core variables:  water temperature, salinity, sea level, surface currents, and ocean color.
  2. Serve Data Sets to the Integrated PaCOOS Data System -   NCDDC is expanding the operational aspects of the West Coast Observing System so it encompasses an even wider range of data sources.  NCDDC is working with the other California Current Ecosystem Data Management partners to develop software tools to provide secure data access, analysis, and display capabilities.
  3. Pilot Integrated Ecosystem Assessment (IEA) Application - The partners plan to demonstrate the utility of the data system as a source of IOOS data and information for the IEA.  The partners will enhance the existing IEA to harness significant data and information accessible via new data transport techniques of open-format servers. This focus will emphasize the five core variables, but will include other data.
