Abstract:
This dataset consists of a vector coverage of bathymetric contours with increasing resolution in coastal areas. Contours were derived from gridded National Ocean Service (NOS) hydrographic survey data provided in the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) Coastal Relief Model Volumes 3, 4, and 5.
Purpose:
This coverage was developed as part of the Gulf of Mexico Ecosystem Pilot Project. This pilot project was designed to improve identification and remote access to habitat data for fishery managers and researchers, and to provide habitat mapping capabilities within the Gulf of Mexico region. To reach this goal, a consortium built on shared expertise and resources from within National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service (NESDIS), and state participants has focused on several tasks, including developing an inventory and clearinghouse for existing habitat-related data and information, continuing developing a searchable FGDC compliant habitat metadata catalog, developing remote internet gateways to life history, habitat, and ecological data sets, and producing geographic information system (GIS) products for habitat mapping.

The attributes of the vector contours were found to be spatially consistent with both the source data and other independently derived data sets. Because the hydrographic surveys used to create these data were highly variable in spatial resolution, this general observed consistency should not serve as a basis for confidence in specific features, or lack of features, represented or implied by the data.

The maximum vertical accuracy based on the limits of the original soundings is 0.3 m in 0 - 20 m of water, 1.0 m in 20 - 100 m of water, and 1% of the water depth for water depths greater than 100 meters. Because original sounding data were interpolated to create a continuous surface, this upper accuracy limit should not be assumed to hold true at any given location.

All of the contours generated for this coverage were based on the National Geophysical Data Center's source data.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Data for the Gulf of Mexico were retrieved from the National Geophysical Data Center's CD-ROMs using the GEODAS software provided. Data were saved in 1-degree square ASCII raster files. ASCII raster files were converted into ESRI GRID coverages and imported into ArcView GIS using the ESRI's Spatial Analyst import utility. All 1-degree grid coverages were then merged into a single coverage using a standard grid manipulation script.

Using the "Gulf of Mexico Grid" grid, sets of contours were generated from 0 to 10 meters depth at 1 meter intervals, from 10 to 20 meters depth at 2 meter intervals, from 20 to 50 meters depth at 5 meter intervals, and from 100 to 200 meters depth at 10 meter intervals. Using the "Gulf Grid - no land" grid, contours were generated from 200 to 500 meters depth at 50 meter intervals and from 500 to the maximum water depth at 100 meter intervals. All contours were then merged into a single vector shapefile.
