Metadata for Managers

Metadata for Managers

This course illustrates the concept, principles, and value of metadata. Course modules explain core metadata concepts and present the business case for metadata including policy and implementation guidance. The course provides targeted instruction to managers who wish to understand the "Who"? "What"? "Where"? and "Why"? of standard metadata. This course is not limited strictly to managers; but may be taken as a basic familiarity or refresher course for anyone wishing to become familiar with the basics of standard metadata.

  • Metadata for Managers is typically presented in six (6) online modules

Introduction to Geospatial Metadata

Introduction to Geospatial Metadata

This course presents the concept, principles, and value of metadata in adherence to metadata standards in current use by Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) member agencies. The initial focus is on discovery level metadata. Detailed metadata information is also presented so that metadata creators can develop more 'robust' levels of metadata documentation, including metadata for access and metadata for understanding. Available metadata tools for the creation and validation of standard metadata are demonstrated. Guidelines and best practices for writing quality metadata are presented.

  • Introduction to Geospatial Metadata is typically presented in six (6) online modules

In addition to the basic overview of standard metadata and metadata catalogs described above, the course can be tailored to a particular focus. Transition to ISO provides a review of the CSDGM standard and presents tools and techniques developed to transition CSDGM metadata to ISO 191** series metadata. Introduction to ISO provides an in-depth examination of the ISO 191** series standards, including UML and XML basics. Workbooks and other resources are reviewed; and an opportunity to read, create, edit and validate ISO 19115-2 metadata using available tools and resources is provided.
