Introduction to Metadata using MERMAid will be offered in an online meeting format. A quick review of the FGDC Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM) and associated profiles and extensions will start the class. Workshop participants will learn to navigate the basic features of MERMAid from record creation and validation to record export. Learn how to set up account structures and approval workflows in MERMAid. General tips for users from beginning metadata creators to more advanced users will be covered.

January 14, 2009, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., CST (course repeats)

Introduction to Geospatial Metadata

FGDCThis course presents the concept, principles, and value of metadata in adherence to the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) core curriculum. It provides the content and structure of the FGDC CSDGM in detail, along with methods for writing quality metadata. Students receive hands-on metadata record creation and validation training with a variety of available software tools, including NCDDC’s MERMAid system. Trainers may customize the training course based on any organization’s specific requirements or data holdings. Designed as a 2-day session, training managers can compress or expand the course to meet user needs. Organizations can also schedule training for individuals for specific NCDDC-related projects. All NCDDC trainers qualify for listing in the FGDC trainer registry.

Creating and Managing Metadata Using NCDDC's

Metadata Enterprise Resource Management Aid (MERMAid)

MERMAidThis course presents the process of constructing and validating FGDC-compliant metadata using NCDDC’s MERMAid tool. It also provides structured methods for managing your metadata records using resource directories and metadata databases. Trainers can customize the training course based on an organization’s specific requirements or data holdings. Although this session is designed for 1 day, training managers can compress or expand the course to meet user needs. Organizations can schedule individual training for specific NCDDC-related projects.

Prerequisite: Introduction to Geospatial Metadata OR Metadata for Managers

Metadata for Managers

TrainingThis course presents the concept, principles, and value of metadata. These modules seek to teach core metadata concepts and present the business case for using metadata. The course also showcases a brief overview of MERMAid's management capabilities. NCDDC does not limit Metadata for Managers strictly to “managers.” The course provides a workshop for all who wish to understand metadata basics. Designed as a half-day session, training managers can compress or expand the course to meet user needs. Organizations may schedule training for individuals for specific NCDDC-related projects.

Train the Trainer

TeacherThis course provides instruction on training materials development for specific audiences, effective training delivery methods, and training event planning and logistical considerations. Participants will explore methods to stimulate implementation of the FGDC metadata standard, Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM), as well as help organizations make the transition to the ISO Standard. The workshop will direct participants to existing metadata resources for the creation, development, and dissemination of metadata. Designed as a 3-day session, training managers can compress or expand the course to meet user needs.
