Outreach
Outreach forms a vital component of NCDDC's mission.
Outreach
NCDDC adds value to the taxpayer dollar by partnering across NOAA and with other agencies to improve access to information vital for making informed decisions that affect the safety and livelihoods of Americans.
NCDDC's partners include the following types of organizations:
- Other NOAA Offices
- Other Federal Agencies
- State and Local Agencies
Mississippi Department of Marine Resources,
Florida State Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission)
- Multiagency Commissions, Committees and Programs
Gulf of Mexico Alliance, Phytoplankton Monitoring Network)
- Academic Institutions
Dauphin Island Sea Lab,
Northern Gulf Institute)
NCDDC constantly seeks to strengthen existing partnerships and form new ones through its outreach efforts. NCDDC Regional Offices are located across the United States. NCDDC Regional Science Officers seek opportunities to share resources toward common goals. NCDDC staff attend a variety of local, regional, and national Events to better understand the needs of the various communities. NCDDC provides support for meetings such as the NOAA Gulf of Mexico Regional Coordinating Team (GoMRCT) workshop on Integrated Ecosystem Assessment (IEA).
NCDDC also offers Metadata Training to assist scientists and agencies in creating records that comply with the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) Content Standard, thus allowing the information to be more easily found by researchers and the public.
Education
NCDDC commits itself to the NOAA goal of increasing the number of
students choosing education and careers supportive of NOAA's mission,
with a particular focus on underrepresented groups. In partnership with the
Northern Gulf Institute and the NOAA National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) Diversity Council, NCDDC created the NOAA/Northern Gulf Institute Diversity Internship Program to provide career exploration opportunities in coastal science data management, data stewardship for fisheries, and ecosystem data management, including metadata development. The internship is open to eligible undergraduate and graduate students targeting populations underrepresented in NOAA, with an emphasis on those from diverse communities in the northern Gulf of Mexico Region.
For more information about the Internship Program, contact Jay Ritchie at the Northern Gulf Institute at jritchie@ngi.msstate.edu.
The NOAA Office of Education provides information on a variety of internships, scholarships, and other student opportunities. In addition, NOAA has free Education Resources for students, teachers, and the public.
